MyDiaryColor.prc: This is a BW & Color compatible version of My Diary 2.0 -- Use this if you have a color device.
MyDiaryBW.prc: This is strictly BW. Smaller size.
Both version work on either device so it's strictly the amount of Palm Memory it takes up.
My Diary is a personal journal for the Palm OS Device. With it, you can keep a daily log of your moods and private thoughts. My Diary is password protected so only you can access it. You can even ask My Diary important questions about your life and it will answer them - maybe! It features three different diary cover "skins" and you can customize the cover text. Every page starts with text from a template so you can easily "fill in the blanks" without a lot of typing.
There are several new features in My Diary 2.x. Some of the more interesting highlights are:
There are many other more moderate enhancements.
To start My Diary, DO NOT ENTER A PASSWORD and click on the "lock" in the middle right rectangle on the side of the My Diary cover. The password is available for registered users only.
If you have registered, then you can use the [Options Menu / Password] to set your password. The next time you start My Diary, you enter your password in the password text field, then tap the lock.
Like the standard MemoPad application, when you start My Diary you can just start typing into the current day's diary page. While editing, you can use the [Edit Menu] to perform the standard edit commands: Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All, Keyboard, and Graffiti Help.
You can also move to other diary dates by tapping on the diary date selector in the upper right-hand corner and picking a date. The earliest date is Jan. 1, 1904. In addition, My Diary has a [Goto Menu] that provides several ways of navigating through the pages. You can go to the: First Page, Previous Page, Next Page, and Last Page. These commands skip all diary dates that do not have entries. In addition, you can choose Today's Page to return to the current page instantly.
You can also move through the diary irregardless of if there's a page or not with the: Next Day and Previous Day commands.
Every diary page has a Mood drop-down list. This gives you the ability to "set the tone" of your diary entry. You can define as many as 15 moods each up to 30 characters in length. Unlike categories, once moods are assigned to a page, if you later delete the mood from the drop-down, it will still remain associated with the page until replaced.
Like standard categories, moods can be edited by you. From the drop-down list, choose "Edit Moods..." You will be sent to a Mood Editor that behaves very similar to a standard category editor. When editing, the mood you have high-lighted in the list will be used for the active diary page.
You can edit your Diary page in Full Screen mode! When you use the [Edit / Full Screen] menu option, the title bar and mood menu are removed and the the tool bar is replaced with Cut/Copy/Paste buttons - very handy. The full screen mode gives you approx. 30% more editing room. The standard Edit menu is still available by tapping on the Menu softkey. To return to normal mode, tap the Done button.
Templates are pre-written diary pages that change be picked when you start editing. You can have as many as 15 of these templates defined. These templates can be simple such as "Dear Diary," or they can be complex:
Dear Diary,
Today I was at school.
My favorite class was OOO.
I hung out with OOO.
After school, I OOO.
This evening I watched OOO on TV.
In the above case, you can double-tap the "OOO" entries and fill them in with what you actually did.
To create a template:
To use a template:
NOTE: If you choose a template, your current diary entry will be over-written!
To delete a template
You may set certain preferences and those preferences will be used the next time you run My Diary. To get to the preference dialog, click on the [Options Menu / Preferences] menu item. Here is the current list and what they do:
Additionally, your date on the diary page will always be the "long" form of your Palm's System Date Format Preference. This means, if you have the Palm display dates as D-M-Y then the long form would be "Dy D Mon Year" or for example, "Sun 25 Feb 2001." Also, when you choose a template, that template automatically becomes your preferred template on following uses.
Registered Users Only! Passwords are used at two different times: First, when you start My Diary, it will ask for your password on the Cover Page. Second, if you are not running My Diary and have used Global Find, then in order to see the found pages you will be prompted for a password.
Choose the [Options Menu / Password] to activate the password editor. This password is not the same one used by your Palm. Most of the time it's somewhat a pain to have a password assigned to your Palm, but it's always better to have a password on My Diary. Register so you can set one.
Every diary page can be exported to MemoPad. You can essentially back up specific pages to MemoPad and then HotSync them to your desktop. These HotSync'd pages can then be printed, archived, or saved in another program. You can then delete those pages from My Diary to save room periodically.
My Diary previously had five Diary Covers, or Skins, for use. Regardless of whether you used them or not, they took space on your Palm. Now, only one skin is provided: My Diary. However! You can pick up other BW and Color skins in files that contain one to ten skins. You can even design your own!
Finding and Using Skins
You can find more skins at www.SandsUSA.com. These are free and may be previewed on the site. All color skins come in a Pack or in single files.
You can only have one skin pack active on your Palm at a time. Every skin file begins with the letters "MDS" which stands for "My Diary Skin", and followed by it's name (e.g. Dusty3D) and by its color state (e.g. BW or COLOR). So you can identify the skin easily (e.g. MDSDusty3DColor.prc or MDSDusty3DBW.prc).
To add a skin you need to HotSync the file to your Palm. If you already have a skin, delete it from your Palm before you HotSync the new skin. If you want to browse skins, then use the Skin Packs which contain 2 to 10 skins and then replace the pack with the single skin you want.
Creating Skins
You can download a blank skin from www.SandsUSA.com or create your own. This must be bitmap that is 160 pixels wide and 145 pixels wide. Draw what you want. They may be Black and White (BW) in monochrome color, or up to 256 colors. The only reserved areas are the Lock and the Password. The resulting image may be in GIF, BMP, JPG, or WMF formats. You can send the image to me, and I'll turn it into a MDS format skin for you. It's a Free Service, however, I'd like to be able to post them to others if you don't mind.
You can also use a resource editor such as RsrcEdit.prc available at www.individeo.net to directly modify an existing skin prc with one or more bitmaps resources (Tbmp). These must be numbered started at 1000 by 100. Each Tbmp resource must also have a corresponding string (tSTR) resource that contains the title of the skin with the same number as the skin (e.g. 1000 is the first title). If you do this method, please make sure you rename the application title appropriately (e.g. MDScoolskinColor) and send me the resulting PRC file so I can include it at the site.
Need to know the future? Well then, Ask My Diary. Choose [Diary Menu / Ask My Diary...] and write in a question. Tap the [Ask Me] button to get your answer.
If you ask any questions starting with Who or What then you need to give My Diary some suggestions for answers. You can enter up to four choices. For instance, if you asked "Who will I marry?" and gave it four choices, My Diary may choose one of the four as your answer. That is, if any of the choices actually is the answer!
When you have the Allow Global Find preference checked, the Global Find will include My Diary in the search for your text. Otherwise the Global Find will not search My Diary. Regardless of the preference, you will always be able to use Global Find while running My Diary.
If you are not running My Diary and have used Global Find to show My Diary entries, then in order to see the found pages you will be prompted for the My Diary password. This is to ensure that nobody snoops your diary.
Whenever you HotSync, you should see the following files backed up in the \Palm\<palm-name>\Backup folder:
Your preferences are always backed up too.
This program is shareware. It's fully functional, however Password Protection Is Disabled. The registered version enables the password and allows you to get free updates with new diary covers etc. Registration is US$5.00. The easiest way to register this software is to buy it online at www.PalmGear.com. As soon as I've received notification from PalmGear, I'll send you the registration code.
