This Program Is “Knot” For Everyone, But It Might Be Right For You
Have you ever tried to secure something in the back of a pickup and been unsure of what type of knot to use? Are you tired of tying a half windsor knot in your ties, but you forgot how to tie a four-in hand? Maybe you are looking for different types of knots to use while fishing. If so, 33 Knots may be for you.
33 Knots is a program that provides both graphical and text descriptions of how to tie and use 33 different knots. The main screen divides the knots into four classes: Tie (as in coat and tie), Common, Fishing and Sport. The classes are presented as menu options at the top. By tapping on any of the four classes, a menu will drop down listing all knots under that class. You then select a knot by tapping on its name. At this point you will either be presented with a text description of how to use and tie the knot, or several graphics that walk you through each step of tying this particular knot. You can switch back and forth between the text and graphics by clicking on a P or T in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
33 Knots provides you with a wide variety of knots that should address any need you might have. It includes instructions for tying silk ties, bow ties (the real kind, not the clip-on kind), neckerchiefs, a wide variety of fishing knots and loops, knots for securing loads, knots for tying lines together, and knots for tying a line to something. With all these knots, you might be concerned you won’t know which knot to use for what. Fear not! The author has been generous enough to provide explanations with many of them that help you determine when they should be used.
I compared this program against similar programs and none of them even came close to the number of knots or the quality of the descriptions and graphics. When I first started using the program I found certain features were awkward to use, and the descriptions needed some clarification, but the author was very receptive to my feedback and quickly corrected the problems. In addition, the author has asked that if I can think of any knots that should be included, he would like to know so he can consider adding them. After using this program for almost 1 year, I have not found one knot I would recommend he add.
I highly recommend this program to anyone who needs to tie knots, but may not remember what types there are, when to use them, and how to actually tie them. 33 Knots costs $9.95 and is available at www.palmgear.com. As far as I know, it will work on any Palm.
