Chapter 1

Installing Dokusha on your Palm Device

Dokusha requires approximately 3.7 Megabytes of free space on your Palm device for a full installation (not including any text files you may wish to install). If you don't have enough memory, you can omit the Kanji dictionary (kanjidic.pdb) and/or the Japanese-English dictionary (jdic1.pdb through jdic4.pdb), but then you will not be able to access these features.

If your device supports Flash memory, you can store all the Dokusha files except dokusha.prc in flash to save RAM (including any Japanese text files you want). Most newer Palm-brand devices have some built-in Flash memory you can access with third-party tools, or if you have a Handspring Visor you can use a Flash memory module. A cheap Visor Solo with a 8-MB Flash Module is ideal as an affordable handheld Japanese dictionary.

To install Dokusha, use the Palm Install Tool or other installer program to load the included files onto your Palm device:

Perform a HotSync operation and the Dokusha program will be installed.

If you have Flash memory available, but a limited amount of free RAM, you can install these files one at a time, using a third-party tool (or if you have a Visor with a memory module, the File Mover) to move them to Flash memory after each HotSync.

The file dokusha.prc contains the actual program and must not be installed in Flash memory. You can save a backup of Dokusha in Flash memory but it must be run from main RAM.
